Target wheat yield: 12.5t/ha
After leaving agricultural college, Simon went to America for a year to work before returning to the family farm. He manages the third generation business in partnership with his brother operating approx. 800 hectares of mostly owned land. The farm is mainly arable but does include some permanent pasture for their flock of 900 breeding ewes, lambing early March and finishing by August.
The business has just lost 185 hectares of contracted land that they have farmed for 38 years due to the client’s divorce. This means developing the business in the next 12 months is something at the forefront of Simon’s mind.
He is passionate about the countryside and looking after the environment and soils for the next generation. A keen golf player and shooter, Simon also enjoys stepping away from the farm to travel. He has recently just returned from a road trip to California and across to Kansas, visiting his old boss who he worked with 28 years ago on the harvest season from Texas to North Dakota. However he has never visited New Zealand and is looking forward to learning more about their farming methods without subsidies.
Simon is married to Linda and has a son who is hopefully following in his footsteps, and a step-daughter. It will be a particularly special trip for Simon as he celebrates his birthday while in New Zealand.
